Native to the Tropical Americas, there are roughly 300 species of Calathea; Calathea Kennedy seems to be one of the rarer varieties, appearing only very infrequently on the houseplant market.

Named for the Botanist Helen Kennedy, (who had a great passion for Marantaceae and was the first to describe it from collections made in Panama) they exhibit a broad, chequerboard pattered leaf of light grey green and solid dark green with redish purple undersides.

Like all Calathea they prefer warmth and lightly moist soil and should be placed in low to medium indirect light.
