Beaucarnea Recurvata (also known commonly as the Ponytail Palm) is native to Eastern Mexico, where mature Beaucarnea specimens can reach several hundred years old and grow to be eight meter high trees. They grow slowly, so are unlikely to ever reach these heights in your home, but if properly cared for, they will last for decades.

Their distinctive expanded caudex stores water, making it a drought tolerant plant that will never the less appreciate regular watering throughout the growing season, but also happily tolerate the occasional missed watering. (Or three)

Place somewhere with strong light and ideally some hours of direct sun. Never allow the soil to stay wet or soggy. Use the 'soak and dry' method instead. Non toxic and easy care.
